Between 2022 and 2024, Brazil expanded its economically navigable waterways by 279 kilometres, increasing from 20,100 km to 20,379 km—a 1.39% rise.
The most significant expansion occurred in the North region, where growth reached 3.56%. According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports (Ministério de Portos e Aeroportos), this improvement forms part of a national strategy to shift freight and passenger transport toward inland waterways, alleviating pressure on roads and railways.
The enlarged network is expected to yield logistical efficiencies, cost reductions, and environmental benefits, enhancing the role of river and canal transport in Brazil’s infrastructure mix.
