Petrobras Advances Carbon Capture with Pilot Project in Rio de Janeiro

Petrobras has initiated a pioneering pilot project to capture and store carbon dioxide, aiming to support its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The São Tomé project, located in Macaé, will capture CO₂ and inject it into a deep saline reservoir in Quissamã, testing technologies and procedures for future large-scale deployment.

Over a three-year period starting in 2028, the initiative plans to capture up to 100,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Regulatory agencies will monitor the project to refine standards and ensure environmental safety, establishing a framework for future carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations in Brazil.

The project also serves as a learning platform for Petrobras, enabling the company to validate methods, explore potential uses for captured CO₂, and advance innovation in the energy transition. Company leaders highlight that the initiative reflects Petrobras’ commitment to combining technological expertise with sustainable solutions for the offshore and onshore sectors.
