Ibama approves Petrobras simulation at the Amazon River mouth but requires adjustments before granting license

Ibama, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, is the federal agency responsible for environmental regulation and licensing in Brazil. It has validated the results of the Pre-Operational Assessment (APO) conducted by Petrobras in the Amazon River mouth Basin, considered the final step before granting the license for exploratory drilling.

The test simulated an oil spill and evaluated the company’s response capacity in emergency situations.

Despite the approval, Ibama pointed out several “areas of attention and improvement” that must be addressed before the definitive license is issued.

Petrobras stated that it will revise the plan according to the environmental agency’s recommendations and resubmit the document by the 26th.

The state-owned company expects to soon obtain authorization to drill the exploratory well in block FZA-M-59, located in the Equatorial Margin.
