Petrobras has contracted drilling services for wells associated with its Cabiúnas–São Tomé carbon capture and storage pilot project in Rio de Janeiro, marking another step toward the operational deployment of CCS technology in Brazil.
The project is designed to capture CO₂ associated with natural gas processing in Cabiúnas and transport it for injection into an onshore saline reservoir in the São Tomé area.
The pilot is intended to validate technologies and monitoring techniques that could subsequently support larger-scale carbon storage projects. Earlier technical planning contemplated approximately 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ injection per year during the pilot phase.
