Brazil–Norway partnership boosts research on sustainable maritime transport and energy

Brazil and Norway have announced a new partnership to finance and support joint research projects focused on technological innovation in energy and sustainable maritime transport. The initiative brings together the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and Finep, linked to Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and was presented during a pre-COP30 event held in Rio de Janeiro as part of the November Conference, a forum dedicated to energy transition and low-carbon innovation.

The agreement provides for the use of funding instruments from both countries to back studies and solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in shipping, accelerating the energy transition, and expanding the adoption of low- or zero-carbon technologies, including cleaner fuels and more efficient maritime operations.

This is the fifth formal collaboration under a broader scientific cooperation framework between Brazil and Norway, reinforcing a long-term agenda of technical exchange between companies, universities, and research centers from both sides.

The partnership also aligns with the two countries’ shared effort to develop sustainable maritime corridors and present concrete results at COP30, which took place in Belém, Pará, from 10 to 21 November 2025.

The expectation is that the projects supported through this cooperation will generate applied, market-ready outcomes, helping to establish cleaner transatlantic routes, promote decarbonization in logistics, and position maritime transport as a key pillar of the global low-carbon economy.
