Federal government launches national geothermal energy program

The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) approved, on October 1, 2025, the creation of the National Geothermal Energy Program (Progeo). The initiative aims to harness the Earth’s natural heat for electricity generation, promoting a clean and renewable energy source.

Progeo will establish guidelines for developing legal frameworks and specific regulations, while also encouraging research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) projects in the sector. The program provides access to R&D&I resources from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), strengthening the technical knowledge and infrastructure needed to advance geothermal energy in Brazil.

Since 1995, the Geothermal Laboratory at the National Observatory, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, has conducted research on this energy source. More than 1,400 Brazilian locations have been mapped for geothermal potential, providing critical data for project implementation.

The creation of Progeo represents a strategic step by the federal government to diversify Brazil’s energy matrix, fostering sustainability and technological innovation in the energy sector.
