Petrobras has completed the acquisition of a 27.5% interest in Block 4, offshore São Tomé and Príncipe.
The company joins a consortium comprising Shell, as operator, Galp and the local petroleum authority. The acquisition complements Petrobras’ existing interests in other blocks in the country and supports its strategy of diversifying its upstream portfolio and replenishing oil and gas reserves.
West Africa’s offshore basins present geological and operational characteristics relevant to Petrobras’ deepwater expertise. The expansion therefore illustrates how capabilities developed in Brazil may be applied in international exploration projects.
For Brazilian contractors and technology providers, Petrobras’ internationalization may eventually create opportunities to participate in cross-border projects, subject to the procurement strategies, local laws and content requirements of each jurisdiction.
