Brazil’s Federal Revenue Agency (Receita Federal) began issuing CNPJs (National Registry of Legal Entities) in alphanumeric format for new registrations and branches on July 31, 2026, driven by the exponential growth in the number of active business establishments — now exceeding 60 million. Existing CNPJs remain valid with no need to amend contracts, corporate documents or public registries. Companies must, however, update their internal systems to process the new format, particularly in the issuance of invoices and in managing client and supplier databases.
